So much for the Penguins having depth?
Prior to this season, all I heard was that the Penguin’s had extreme depth, but in the last 3 games it has become evident that without role players like Malkin, Gonchar, and Kennedy that they cannot compete. Add Talbot and Letang to the mix and the situation worsens. They will most likely lose the game tonight because there have been few offensive oppurtunies to back up Fleury’s decent goaltending performace. That being said, do you think the Penguins can rebound without the impact players that everyone has grown accustomed too? To me this proves that the Penguins are not the "all mighty" team in the NHL, and with injuries any team is susceptable to terrible play. I don’t care who they lose, if they were truly a deep team they would find a way to generate offensive production. Your thoughts?
- It’s November. Why are you talking about the playoffs? It’s not guaranteed that they will make the playoffs…

arsmvp – Just because I love baseball doesn’t mean I hate every other sport.

cdn24 – I agree, but at the same time Goligoski is comparable to Gonchar in play. Last season, Goligoski was not nearly as mature as he is this season. Letang was a crucial loss because he was an impact defensive player, but he was solid offensively as well. They need to generate more offense if they plan on winning games in the near future.
- My question didn’t pertain to panicing, it deals with whether or not they can be considered a DEEP team. The mark of a good team is one that can survive even with numerous injuries. The Penguins have proved they can’t survive with injury, and aren’t as deep as everyone previously thought. I’m not saying they won’t make the playoffs, I’m saying it’s too early to talk about the playoffs…

Take away the top 2 d men from any team and they are going to struggle. Depth is one thing but top d-men cannot be replaced. Look at how much they struggled last year without Gonchar. There is no way your 7 and 8th d Men are anywhere close to your top 2 no matter how deep you are. Add Malkin and Talbot to the mix and you have to struggle.

they’re not on the panic meter.

Trust me, they’ll get it going

I’m worried that the Pens will slip a little. Hopefully Talbot, Gonch, Letang, Kennedy, Orpik, and Geno heal up so we can get ready for the playoff push.

Tough little road trip and they won a couple without Malkin/Gonchar et al……..road losses to LA, SJ and Boston (maybe) do not mean the end of the world. Can they rebound? Well………they have one more point then they did this time last year…they dealt with injuries last year…..they are still 1st in the division/conference SO I wouldn’t panic, they are still the team to beat in the East and help is on the way. Like Cdn Fan said…..without your top 2 D, last year’s leading scorer, some pluggers…….and there are rumours that Crosby is playing hurt and just in the line-up because of all the injuries, just gotta keep their head above water…and they are.

may be getting worse- see what happened to Orpik tonight???

Ok first off it’s November, so panic time is a long way away. The pens are without their two power play qb’s in gonchar and letang. The take away one the teams two best offensive players and they are bound to struggle.

They don’t have as much depth as the Calgary Flames. You have to be really deep to get your Swine Flu shots before women and children.

Wow, all this panic about the Pens is hilarious….. IT’S NOVEMBER! There just seems to be too much irony in a Pirates fan criticizing any other sports team about depth. But hey, we traded for Iwamura so maybe will have a winning record next year! I’ve only been saying that since I was 9…..

It’s not just the injuries, but also the fact that it takes line a few games to build chemistry while playing together. you bring up all the minor leaguers then start mixing and matching all the lines constantly then of course you are going to go through dry spells while guys are getting used to their linemates tendencies, etc. The Red Wings have gone through the same problem early on….but you can bet your house both will be in the playoff hunt come March. Every team has dry spells, the good teams adjust and find a way to right the "ship".
